Astoria Kiwanis to hold Family Open House
Published 4:00 pm Tuesday, March 4, 2014
The Astoria Kiwanis Club will host a Kiwanis Family Open House from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday in Room 219, Columbia Hall, at Clatsop Community College. There is no cost for this event, and the public is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
Because the local Astoria Kiwanis Club works closely with associated school service organizations, a primary purpose of the open house is to share information on how the Astoria High School Key Club and Astoria Middle School Builders Club provide members with opportunities to serve their school and community, build character and develop important leadership skills.
In addition, parents and family members of the club participants will glean information about how they can support service and leadership activities. Attendees will learn about what the Kiwanis family does at the local, national and international level to improve the lives of children and the health and well-being of communities. There will also be a presentation on the Kiwanis Doernbecher Childrens Cancer program.
Key Club members perform acts of service in their communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing and organizing food drives. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district and international levels. Builders Club is a service organization for middle school and junior high students.
