Two students discovered a body in the woods behind Astoria High School Monday.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted today. Investigators hope it will determine a cause of death for the deceased person, whose name is being withheld as the investigation continues. The identity may be released later today. Visit www.dailyastorian.com for updates.
Despite rumors to the contrary, Astoria Police are certain the deceased is not a recent student at Astoria High School, Deputy Chief Brad Johnston said.
A caller reported the discovery to 911 at 3:42 p.m. Monday. Police soon contacted a 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy who had come across the body in the area commonly known as the hill, while waiting for a ride.
They were walking the trails when they came across what they initially thought was a person who had fallen down near a trail, Johnston said. They soon realized that the person was deceased.
The Clatsop County Medical Examiner was notified and responded to the scene. Astoria Police were assisted by a detective from the Oregon State Police in the investigation and were assisted by the Astoria Fire Department with manpower and resources.
The Clatsop County Sheriffs Office helped respond to Astoria Police calls while APD officers were at the scene.
