Portland City Hall Security Guard Honored By Activists

Friends and acquaintances of a departing City Hall security guard celebrated her Friday. It was Cindy Williams’ last day on the job.
Williams has been a fixture at City Hall for seven years. She’s greeted people as they enter the building, monitored security screens and patrolled the sidewalks outside.
Williams works for a security company that has a contract with the city. But she has yet to be reassigned.
Cameron Whitten is a social justice activist who went on a hunger strike outside City Hall last year. He says Williams formed relationships with people who entered the building and with those who slept outside. Whitten says she helped defuse tensions when necessary.
Whitten said, “I know that our current mayor talked a lot when he was campaigning about community policing, and I think Cindy Williams is one of those people that we’ve actually seen take that term and put it into action.”
An online fundraiser for Williams has raised more than $1,500.
