Medford, Ashland Newspapers Have New Owners

Two Oregon daily newspapers are part of a group of publications that has been sold to Fortress Investment Group.
Medford’s Mail Tribune and The Ashland Daily Tidings are now managed by GateHouse Media, an affiliate of Fortress.
Rick Edmonds is media business analyst at the Poynter Institute. He says he’s not surprised to see the papers sold.
And he says it’s a further sign of a relatively healthy market for newspapers. Acquisition prices may be low, but according to Edmonds, “There at least are interested buyers and that was not the case by and large from about 2008 to 2011 — it was very hard to sell papers at all,“
GateHouse owns 400 publications. Edmonds says the company’s management style follows industry trends, which include pay-walls and restructuring staff.
