Cannon Beach Hardware and Public House in Popular Mechanics

CANNON BEACH Cannon Beach Hardware and Public House will appear in the September issue of Popular Mechanics.

Known affectionately by locals as the Screw and Brew, the establishment will be part of a segment where readers are asked to nominate their favorite hardware stores.

Its very cool, said co-owner Ryan Dewey. We were thrilled to be asked.

Ryan Dewey, along with his father Craig Dewey, opened Cannon Beach Hardware and Public House Memorial Day weekend 2010.

While combining hardware and beer taps may seem strange to many Americans, the practice is common in Ireland. Craig Dewey found this out firsthand a few years back as he wandered through Dingle, Ireland.

On a business trip, Dewey was feeling peckish and thirsty and asked his hotel for directions to the nearest pub. Arriving at the place that had been pointed out, he thought he had taken a wrong turn.

Dad was standing in a hardware store surrounded by shovels, screwdrivers and hammers, said Ryan Dewey. He told the proprietor he was looking for the pub and thought he was lost. The guy said Youre in it.

After a good meal and some refreshing beer, the elder Dewey decided that this was a business model he could get behind and imported the idea to Cannon Beach.

Now, with the coverage from Popular Mechanics, the concept will gain further attention across America.

Representatives of the magazine came to Cannon Beach Hardware and Public House last May to take photographs and learn about the stores operation.

They wanted to learn about the idea behind the concept and what we do in general, Dewey said. A photo shoot can be kind of hard to do when its crowded, but we made it work.

The Deweys are happy to have been Cannon Beach pioneers in combining beer and food with home improvement.

Ryan Dewey is glad for the recognition from readers, but feels his business does nothing beyond what any other local business does to make ends meet.

Its just a multi-faceted business, which is something most of us have to do when you live in Cannon Beach, he said.
