WARRENTON The Grand Champions were back on the course Wednesday for their second round of match play in the 103rd annual Oregon Coast Invitational at the Astoria Golf & Country Club.

And, like they say, Its time to separate the pretenders from the contenders, as eight golfers from the Championship Flight moved on to the quarterfinals following Wednesdays action.

Among the names advancing one medalist, two ex-champions and three locals.

With defending Grand Champion Jack Whealdon not entered in this years event, the field appears to be wide open.

One of the favorites just might be the Grand Champions medalist from over the weekend, Anthony Arvidson. The former Oregon State golfer got past Carl Johnson in Wednesdays match play, after battling Johnson, the wind and the course.

It was really tough out there, said Arvidson, who had the winning hand in Wednesdays match. The wind was blowing as hard as its blown all week, and the course has gotten pretty hard over the last two or three days. Neither me or Carl played very well (on the front nine).

Arvidson was 1-over par after nine holes, but was still 4-up on Johnson.

I made a couple birdies, and played pretty steady, he said after his first nine holes. Im just trying to get the ball on the fairway to the green, and make pars. Its kind of like British Open golf out here. The wind picks up, and makes it 10 times harder.

The sunny weather was deceptive, with the wind playing havoc with drives off the tee, in addition to the fast greens.

Its a combination of both, Arvidson said. When the wind picks up, the greens get firmer, and that just makes for a really tough golf course. The ball runs away, and you just have a real hard time making par. Its a lot different than it was for qualifying.

Then again, golfers from Arizona like Arvidson would give anything for a nice cool breeze.

Its been great, he said. Its 115 degrees down there, and 64 here. So it feels like free air conditioning.

Elsewhere, Jerrod Kunde got past Pat Wood, highlighting his day with a chip-in off the green on No. 7; two-time Grand Champion Jay Ross overcame a disasterous first hole to defeat Bret Stevens; 2001 Grand Champion Randy Heriot scored a win over Matt Elmes; and Astorias Jamie Ihander topped Chris Shepard.

The semifinals are set in the Junior/Seniors Championship Flight. Fridays Final Four will feature Mike Ralston vs. Kurt Payne, and locals Mitch Mooney vs. David Nygaard, as Mooney got past defending champion Michael Healy Wednesday.
