A fire on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation has forced the closure and evacuation of the Kah-Nee-Ta resort.

Officials said the fire covered 10,000 acres to 12,000 acres Sunday night and aircraft have been called into drop retardant. There are about 250 fire fighters currently stationed on the reservation.

“Overnight we’re going to conduct structure protection,” said William Wilson, assistant fire management officer at Warm Springs. “(We will) ensure we get all people out of there to maintain safety. We’re going to hold the fire from entering subdivisions if possible, and to not impact the Kah-Nee-Ta vacation resort.”

Williams says crews will likely let the fire burn out in some areas where people are not in danger.
