In the six months since the Clackamas Town Center shootings, mental health workers in the area have noticed an uptick in requests for help.
Martha Spiers manages safety net programs for Clackamas County’s Behavioral Health.
She says the county hasn’t specifically tracked the number of people who said they were traumatized by the shopping mall shooting spree. But Spires says the increase was apparent at a walk-in clinic just blocks from the mall, and on the county’s crisis hotline.

“The experience of the crisis line workers was that, that night of the shooting, we had probably ten calls related to the event. On the days following we’d get several every day.”
Over time, the calls waned, but the sheriff’s department’s recent release of its report on the shooting sent some people seeking additional help from counselors.
Spiers says it’s common for feelings of trauma to fade and recur.
