On May 9, several students from Warrenton Grade School and Middle School were invited to Clatsop Community College to participate in a Mental Math Day Competition.
Competing against several other schools, with about 120 total participants, students were given a series of questions that they had 30 seconds in which to do the problem in their head and then write their answer on paper. The categories went by grade level, except for string estimation, and the eighth grade had both an algebra and a non-algebra category.
Warrenton had several top finishers in various categories. Reagan Hunt, in sixth grade, won first place in the string estimation contest. Second place winners in their grade level included third-grader Tyler Puckett, fourth-grader Sam Irwin, eighth-grader Dominic Betts and eighth-grade algebra student Alexander Ocana.
Eighth-grader Raymond Alcobendas won third place for algebra. Other participants were Dylan Beeman, Cameron Dorning, Mia McFadden, Ann Heyen, Nicole Ramsdell, Austin Little, Darren Garnett, Claire Bussert, Jaaron Green and Heidi Erland.
