Tough as Spartans

LAS VEGAS Two men with local connections participated in the Super Spartan Race held April 6 in Las Vegas. It featured 8.6 miles and 20-plus obstacles in 80-plus-degree weather.
More than 6,200 entered the race and fewer then 5,000 finished. Former Seaside resident Ken Benfield, who graduated Seaside High School in 1975, and his nephew Patrick Morgan of Astoria, who graduated Knappa High School in 2012, were among the finishers. Benfield placed fifth and Morgan placed 49th in their respective age brackets. Benfield will compete in an upcoming Super Beast course 12-plus miles and 25-plus obstacles in Utah on June 29. Morgan will compete in a Spartan Sprint three to five miles and 15-plus obstacles on Aug. 3 and 4 in Washougal, Wash.
