Portland Mayor Charlie Hales says he’s wary of the city’s entanglement with the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Police Chief Mike Reese released a report last week saying Portland officers had worked with the FBI on at least one investigation of domestic terrorism over the last year.

Speaking on OPB’s Think Out Loud, Hales he wants to work with the federal government, but with limits.

“There are many times when the police bureau and the FBI do cooperate. But I also want us to be a bastion of civil liberties in this city. And we have an agenda of public safety that’s more about crime prevention and safe neighborhoods and less about high profile cases.”

High profile cases recently seen in Portland include the conviction of Mohamed Muhamud for trying to bomb the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, and the arrest of city employee Reaz Qadir Khan on charges of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.

Hales voted against working with the Joint Terrorism Task Force more than a decade ago when it was first suggested and he was a city commissioner.
