Letter: How Costco helps

Wow, Im not sure who wrote the article Local enterprise builds community (Nov. 29), but I thought The Daily Astorian was supposed to be a viable news organization. This isnt news. Its just a local slam page for a business that actually contributes a lot to this community.

Comparing Costco to Walmart: I am a Costco employee, and I find it absolutely disheartening that someone would think of me and my fellow employees like that. I personally donate around $600 a year to United Way of Clatsop County (UWCC), along with most of my fellow employees. Not to mention a lot of money to Doernbecher Foundation Childrens Miracle Network (CMN). And Costco matches those.

Yes, the CMN may not be local, but UWCC is, and its pretty sad if the community looks on us so lowly. If I thought for one moment this is what the entire community thought about us, I would find it much easier to keep the $600 in UWCC and the extra $400 in CMN in my pocket each year, but honestly, its about those who need the, help not someones personal view on a company and its employees, who do so much for this community.

I just want to make it clear that my comment is in no way meant to disrespect The Daily Astorian or its writers. It is only meant to shine a light on the fact that Costco and all of my fellow co-workers actually try to do as much as we can for this community. We just try not to display it all over the place, and prefer that we remain as anonymous donors to the community.

Yes, it may look as though we dont do much because of this, but Costco has never been about advertising itself, including donations.
