Warrenton 56, Seaside 45
SEASIDE When in doubt, get the ball to No. 33.
Thats what the Warrenton Lady Warriors did Tuesday night at Seaside, and 33 came through, with 33.
Warrenton senior guard Mady Hanna poured in 33 points to lead the Warriors to a 56-45 upset victory over the Gulls, one of the favorites to win the Cowapa League this year.
Thats a big win for us, said Warrenton coach Chris Spencer, as the Warriors beat the Gulls for the first time since the 2008-09 season. Seasides a good team, and I knew it was going to be a good test. I was told coming in, Watch out for No. 21 (Kaitlin Lewis).
Lewis still had a strong game for the Gulls, but suffered a hand injury late in the first half that affected her play in the second half.
Meanwhile, Hanna had the hot hand for the Warriors, especially in the third quarter.
After Seaside had taken a 24-22 lead to start the third, Hanna drove the baseline for two points the first of her 13 points in the quarter.
Another layup by Hanna gave Warrenton a 28-26 lead, then she took her game outside, draining three straight 3-pointers in the midst of a 15-0 Warrior run, going from a 26-24 deficit to a 39-26 lead.
The Gulls closed to within 48-43 with two minutes remaining, but Hanna closed it out, connecting on 10-of-15 free throws in the final 4:59 of regulation.
Lewis and Maddy Villegas scored 13 points apiece to lead Seaside, which actually rallied from a 21-8 deficit in the second quarter to tie the game at 22-22 at halftime.
I told our girls, Theyre going to make a run at us, Spencer said. Good teams always do. And we left some points out there we missed some easy shots, and they were able to tie it up at halftime.
Then Mady got hot for us in the third quarter, he said. Shes the one we want with the ball. We want to put it in her hands. Thats the problem were going to have with other teams. Everybody knows that shes going to be the one to stop.
Katie Lundberg scored eight points off the bench for the Warriors, including six of the teams first 11 points.
Kim Elkins scored on a big offensive rebound for Warrenton in the fourth quarter, while Kim Dowaliby and Mickayla Lewis both had key baskets in the third period.
Hannas 33 points ties her for sixth place all-time for most points in a single game for Warrenton. Staci Hanna, Deedee Arnall and Brooklyn Campbell are tied for fifth with 34 points in a single game (Misty Wade still owns the Warrior record, with 40 points vs. Vernonia in 1995).
Weve got things to work on, but well take this anytime, Spencer said. I was very happy to walk out of there with a win.
Seaside finished 18-of-64 from the field, while Lewis had seven rebounds. Jessie Olson and Emily Becker had four steals apiece.
