Letter: Fill the sports void

For those of us who enjoy listening to engaging radio conversation on our way to work in the morning, our options are few. General national/local news, weather and a segment or two of sports news round out an hour on the local AM dial.
On the FM side, community radio, along with National Public Radio (NPR) offer a host of topics that, while interesting, tend to be difficult to follow before that first cup of coffee. If your pleasure is hearing music in the morning, this bit of whining will not interest you.
Until about a year ago, we did have another choice: 1230 AM offered sports broadcasting 24/7, as an affiliate of Fox Sports. Literally overnight the format changed from sports to country music. If there was an announcement of this coming change, I did not hear it. Knowing little about radio, I can only assume the change occurred due to poor ratings, but perhaps there were other reasons.
I cant speak for every morning commuter, but I listened to that station every day. Im sure I purchased something that had been advertised on the station. There are a lot of us every morning, driving in our cars to wherever the day will take us. I have trouble believing there arent others in the listening area who feel the way I do, that a 24/7 dedicated sports broadcast in Clatsop County is a must.
Im not suggesting a sports station would solve some, or any of the problems we face in our community today. However a new frequency could provide the community with another information conduit so vital in times of crisis. A new frequency that would be a permanent home we could tune in to, would allow us to follow our favorite teams.
Currently, we are forced to search the dial, hoping to find a game on one of the many frequencies owned by Ohana Media Group. For the OMG, a new frequency would mean a new revenue stream.
Some of us driving to work in the morning miss hearing news of the sports world. We feel deprived, even denied news from a world we place far more importance on than is necessary. News that for no tangible reason may affect our mood for an entire day.
As the most prolific broadcaster in our area, OMG is in the best position to make this happen. The company has several options regarding affiliation. My dad isnt a Dan Patrick fan, but I enjoyed the programming on Fox Sports while it was available. We need something to fill the sports radio void we now suffer.
So I appeal to you OMG, build it here in Clatsop County, and they will come to listen. Go Ducks!
