THE OREO ® IS 100

Unless youve been living under a rock, you may have heard that the Oreo ® Cookie is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year. While other cookies may be older (Fig Newtons, Snickerdoodles), no other cookie has the emotional charm of an Oreo – except Moms homemade chocolate chip cookies, of course.

Credit marketing savvy for the Oreos success – the Oreo is a cookie with a story. Twist and eat the middle, or dunk em, or whatever – however you eat an Oreo, chances are you eat a bunch of em. Its no different here in the store, as our Oreo Cookie ice cream is a perennial #1 by a wide margin.

And speaking of wide margins, the Oreo helped make me what I am today. Seriously – I ballooned in 7th grade largely (no pun) due to Oreos being my after-school snack. Then again, I went to school a LOT.

So if the Oreo is so darned popular, why the extra publicity here? Reverse psychology, or course. We go through so much Oreo Cookie ice cream in the summer that we will temporarily run out. This summer, we encourage you to think different and try something else. Dont run with the crowd. Live on the edge. Be yourself. Try Double Butterscotch Chip, or New York Cheesecake, or Chocolate Covered Banana, or even Lemon Custard.

That way, there will be plenty of Oreo Cookie for the rest of us.

FACEBOOK, AND NOWFOURSQUARE?

It seems like there a new social networking system every week. LinkedIn, Mirror, Twitter, Orkut, Meetup, Frühstückstreff*, Zooppa (yes, all real sites) – I read a Wikipedia site showing more than 300 of em, from general to specific. If youre 21 or younger, you no doubt are on 295 of them. If youre my age, you might say, Whaaaaa?

But then theres Foursquare. No, not the old playground game, which, by the way, I was a champion in the 5th and 6th grade (this was before the Oreos). Foursquare is a location-based mobile social network which is a funny thing for people with no cell phone to consider, buthere we are. I asked my under-21 associates about it, thinking if anyone would know about it theyd know and theyd show me their Foursquare postingsbut instead, they said, Whaaaaa?

Like our Facebook situation, weve found TWO Zingers Homemade Ice Cream pages, neither of which we created. We have reviews posted on both pages, and one of the two pages even has a Mayor (if you do Foursquare, you know what that is). Were trying to get the two pages merged into one, but for now, my questions to you Foursquare users (and other Internet geeks) are this:

• Do you actively use Foursquare for food reviews?
• Would it be beneficial if we (Zingers) had a presence, like on Facebook?
• How the heck did we get there in the first place?

Perhaps the Mayor can respond to this last one (if anyone would know, this person would). More on this next month.

* it means Breakfast Meeting. But it sounds sooooo coooool.
