Hemp Fest moving to Hammond? Harbor master says he’s never heard of it

Organizers of the Port Astordam Hemp Festival have announced their new location Tuesday for their August event that will host Ziggy Marley, food tents, merchandise, and a host of pro-marijuana speakers a day after their application was withdrawn from the city of Astoria.

The problem is their new location, the Hammond Marina in the city of Warrenton, has not yet been approved, according to Warrenton city officials. They say the event will have to be approved in the next 30 days not only by the city but also by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Ive never heard of it. Theyre lying, Harbor Master Keith Pinkstaff said Tuesday.

Organizers posted a major announcement Tuesday on their Facebook page, that read, After struggling to get our event permit approved by the city of Astoria, the organizers of PortAstordam Hemp Festival have withdrawn the permit application and given up on holding the event within Astoria.

It has been a very disappointing experience as we very much wanted to have the local businesses and citizens of Astoria benefit from this event.

There is good news though we’re simply moving the event out to the Hammond Marina, where the Crab Festival was held for years. The new location is only six miles west of Astoria and is very close to Ft. Stevens State park for those who want to camp overnight. The city of Warrenton has welcomed this event with open arms, we’re delighted to be working with a cooperative city government to see that the event goes off without a hitch. All of the Ziggy Marley tickets that have been sold will be honored at the new location. We will be updating the portastordam.org webpage to reflect the new venue location as soon as possible.

Later in the day, the announcement was withdrawn, following questions from The Daily Astorian.

City Manager Kurt Fritsch put the brakes on when told of the festival announcement Tuesday morning.

Were neutral to this, there is no open arms embracing of any kind, he said. To use the Hammond Marine, the festival will need to go through the process of getting approval by the Army Corps before they can use that property.

Fritsch confirmed an application had been picked up but cautioned approval pending things like security plans, and coordination with Warrenton Police and Fire departments.

Police Chief Mathew Workman also said he knew nothing about the event as of Tuesday.

Its not a done deal at this time, Fritsch said.
