The first big bottle drop redemption center in Salem opens Monday.

In an effort to change the way people get cash for the bottles and cans they save, the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative is opening a chain of redemption centers. The first was in Wood Village in 2010. The second in Oregon City last year. Now Salem has one. Spokeswoman, Lisa Shifflett, says they’re more centers are on the way.

Shifflett says, “Currently, we’re testing a different floor plan and new equipment. But it could roll-out to be about 45 around our state.”

Customers can either use the new center’s counting machines themselves; ask staff to count their cans and bottles; or drop them off in a bag and have a credit added to their BottleDrop account. The Salem facility will employ 10 people initially.

Five big retailers close to it — Fred Meyer, Roth’s, Safeway, Wal-Mart and Winco — will no longer be required to accept deposit containers.

Costco and a different Roth’s will continue to accept deposit bottles and cans.
