In honor of “N is for Newspaper” week, teacher DEBBY REED and SHOOTING STARS CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER director, DENISE GILIGA, took 12 students to visit The Daily Astorian’s operating systems manager, CARL EARL (pictured, inset).
Thanks to Carl’s assistance, “the pre-K and kindergarten classes were able to get a first-hand look at the who, what, when, where and why’ workings of a daily newspaper,” Debby told the Ear.

“Carl provided the children with an informative talk about how the paper is created, a tour of the offices and the actual press, and a chance to ask all the questions they wished,” Debby explained. “The children were most impressed to learn that a spool of the paper’s newsprint would reach all the way to Seaside if unrolled.”
“Back at school,” she added, “the children used the field trip as an inspiration in creating their own class newspaper – The Shooting Stars Pre-K Press!”
