New art from the gallery group brings light in the winter

New art that can brighten any corner of your home has just arrived at many galleries. So don’t let sleet, snow or blowing winds stop you from exploring the Cannon Beach Gallery Group offerings.

As we just had a brief encounter with a light snowfall, “When Snow Falls” is an appropriate new image by George Vetter. A gentle snowfall in generous quantity followed by a still day creates a very memorable scene in his newest photograph, which was captured at Camp 18, approximately 20 miles east of Cannon Beach along Highway 26.

At the Cannon Beach Arts Association, artist Liz Cohn is featured with her collaborative project from Feb. 4-29. Liz has been making art on playing cards most of which were mailed to over 150 artists all over the world for them to alter and add to in any medium.

The resulting collection is over 1000 collaborative small works of unique art. This show will highlight her collection and include a juried component in which artists are encouraged to make their own “playing card.”

Every February, DragonFire Gallery celebrates the Chinese New Year with new art and a great party in the company of many artists and customers. This year’s event will be very special as DragonFire celebrates their 10th anniversary as well as the very auspicious Year of the Dragon.

The celebration will take place over the President’s Day Weekend, Feb.18 and 19. An exhibition of new artwork created by DragonFire artists for this event will open with a reception Saturday, Feb. 18 from 2-5 p.m. Back by popular demand to provide music will be local talent Bucky Pottschmidt on guitar and vocals. Asian inspired food and refreshments will be served.

On Sunday, Feb. 19 from 1-3 p.m., violinist Zach Konowalchuck will perform a variety of International Folk Music from Celtic to Gypsy and beyond. This is an event not to be missed! Mimosas and little bites will be served.

Haystack Gallery is doing a new month- long feature for February this year. A number of their artists including: John Ebner, Michael Tieman, Janis Ellison, Sean Conrad and others have created mini originals that will each retail for $99. Various mediums are used: watercolor, oil and pastels all based on the theme, “Heart to Heart.” Each artist has done their own interpretation of the theme so we have landscapes, fiagures, and floral images among the various originals. These will only be featured during February, so stop in and pick up a new mini or two for that corner spot.

Bronze sculptor Georgia Gerber is bringing in large works such as “Arctic Hare” and “Balancing Deer” to Northwest by Northwest Gallery. These large pieces are labor intensive taking up to four months to complete, the beginning stage being the clay sculpting. “Balancing Deer” may remind people of the deer that are part of the twenty-six sculptures surrounding Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland.

Primary Elements Gallery is featuring work by Greg Navratil, a local artist who starts his process by visiting colorful natural areas. Numerous photos are taken and then back in the studio he uses the photograph to guide his paintings. Using grids on the canvas, tiny shapes of paint reminiscent of “pointillism” slowly create a vibrant image.

Bronze Coast Gallery is pleased to announce the creation of a new sculpture by Oregon artist, Rodd Ambroson, Morning Song,’ in an edition of only 27. The Bronze Coast Gallery also features many smaller pieces of art to fit a variety of spaces. Annie Henrie has created figurative paintings 12″ x 12″ and Don Dahlke has completed some small 13″x 17″ paintings.

Artist Rosetta has small bronze wildlife masks while artists Joshua Tobey and Jim Eppler offer small bronze sculptures including Bufflehead ducks as well as miniature wolves, elk and cougars.

So get out and enjoy these new offerings, and stop in front of Haystack Gallery where a few brave daffodils are starting to bloom. Perhaps the promise of a short winter and a sign that spring may be right around the corner.

The Gallery Group members include: Bronze Coast, Cannon Beach Arts Association, DragonFire, George Vetter FotoArt, Haystack, Heritage, IceFire, Jewelry by Sharon Amber, Jeffrey Hull, Modern Villa, Northwest by Northwest, Primary Elements, and White Bird Gallery.

Patty Coomes and her husband Bill have owned and operated Haystack Gallery since 1985.
