Seaside boys, Astoria girls splash to wins

The swimmers have made their final turns, and they’re headed for the home stretch of the 2011-12 season.

And what better way to cap off the regular season than with a Clatsop Splash at the Astoria Aquatic Center?

The Astoria swim teams hosted the Seaside Seagulls for a league dual meet Thursday, as both teams get set for next week’s Cowapa League championships at St. Helens, followed by the District 1 meet, Feb. 10 and 11 at Astoria.

And fans from both sides went home happy following Thursday’s meet. Astoria posted a 102-57 win on the girls’ side, while Seaside topped Astoria 109-59 for the boys.

Now it’s on to bigger meets for the Gulls and the Fish.

“We were pretty solid in the boys meet today,” said Seaside coach Mike Brown. “We still have a lot of work to do over the next week, with league and districts coming up. I’m happy that we swam well. They’ve been working hard.”

Instead of calling it a “tune-up,” Astoria coach Tim Roth said the meet was “kind of a psyche-up.’

“The way swimming works, you try to peak for one meet,” he said. “And districts is that one meet. The kids worked hard this week. We beat ’em up pretty good over the last few days, so I really wasn’t expecting them to peak right now.”

Still, several Astoria swimmers had lifetime marks, or “lifetime meets,” as Janessa Wright did.

The Astoria senior led off for the winning 200-yard medley relay team to start the meet; then won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 38.97 seconds; won the 100-yard backstroke (1:10.06); and swam the anchor leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay.

Teammates Niquelle Baxter, Kelly Woltjer and Betsy Weidman joined her on the relays, while Weidman won the 200-yard freestyle (2:24.15) and 100-yard freestyle (1:04.42), and Woltjer captured the butterfly (1:15.67) and the 500-yard freestyle (6:37.88).

Astoria’s Becca Alfaro added a pair of second-place finishes.

The Astoria boys had one win, as Nick Janda took first in the 500 freestyle (5:42.01), 15 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

The highlights of the meet for Roth included “my sprinter, Aaron Miller, who PR’d in both of his events,” he said.

“Kelly Woltjer dropped some serious time in her 100 fly; our 500 freestylers (Woltjer, Aimee Schacher and Jasmine Golden-Sea) went 1-2-3, and that was pretty impressive.”

Elsewhere, “Aimee Schacher dropped about eight seconds off her time in the 500,” he said. “And Nick Janda is starting to pick it up in the boys’ 500. He had a season best.”

The Seaside boys, meanwhile, will be a serious threat to capture a District crown in two weeks.

The Gulls won every event but one, with Christian Anderson (200 individual medley and butterfly) and James Stewart (50 and 100 freestyles) winning two events each. David Hoth, Garrett Brown and Charlie Kloss won the 200 freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, respectively.

“This was our first meet this year that we’ve had Christian Anderson back, and he did an awesome job today,” coach Brown said. “Those were some great times for him, and some lifetime PRs (2:24.91 in the 200 IM, 1:04.64 in the butterfly).”

He added, “Garrett Brown and James Stewart swam well, and Sonny Davis and Max Beaudoin both had good days. David Hoth also had a good day in the 200 free, the 500 and he anchored the last relay.”

Emma Hassan had a win for the Lady Gulls in the 50 freestyle, Michaela Anderson took the breaststroke in 1:18.77, and both swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay, along with Kathy Lin and Katie Corliss.
