Miss Clatsop County Scholarship pageant on tap

SEASIDE Twelve women will compete for three titles Feb. 4 in the Miss Clatsop County Scholarship Pageant at the Seaside Civic and Convention Center.

General admission tickets are available at the door for $10 or from any contestant, the Seaside Chamber of Commerce, the Seaside Convention Center, Encore Dance Studio/Gearhart or Newmans at 988 prior to the event.

There are five contestants trying to become Miss Clatsop County 2012, Kameko Musolf Perry of Astoria, Erin Chapman of Seaside, Rebecca Quijano of Knappa, Desiree Hollyman of Seaside and Sydney Dufka of Arch Cape. Three are local graduates attending college and two are still in high school.

For the titles of Miss Clatsop County’s Outstanding Teen 2012 and Miss North Coast’s Outstanding Teen 2012, there are seven competing. They are Ashley Allen of Tillamook, Chelsea Palmerton of Astoria, Jessica Brown of Seaside, Jewels Carr of Astoria, Anna Keim of Seaside, Giselle Pincetich of Seaside and Hannah Bacon of Seaside.

A benefit dinner will be held 6 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Loft at the Red Building in Astoria. Tickets to the dinner are $50 and come with a $15 reserved ticket to the show Saturday night. Saturday’s program will feature outgoing titleholders, Miss Clatsop County Jessica Humble, Miss North Coast Alyssa Sanders, Miss Clatsop County Outstanding Teen Abi Anderson, Miss North Coast’s Outstanding Teen Alexis Mather, Miss Sunset Empire’s Outstanding Teen Hannah Garhofer and a guest, Miss Oregon 2011 Caroline McGowan.

The Miss Clatsop County Scholarship Pageant is the preliminary competition of the Miss Oregon Scholarship Program and is part of the Miss America Organization, a leading scholarship provider for women. The winners will go on to represent the county at the state pageant in July in Seaside.

The 2011 Miss Clatsop County Princess Kelsey Fausett will select this year’s princess from 23 candidates in a random drawing.

Here are details

of the contestants:

Rebecca Quijano, 19, is studying at the University of Oregon, on a four-year scholarship, studying art and psychology, hoping to become an art therapist for children. She is a graduate of Knappa High School where she wrestled at 119 pounds and was a two-time state champion logger.

Talent: piano, “Irish Wedding”

Kameko Musolf Perry, 18, is a 2011 Astoria High School graduate earning her transfer degree at Clatsop Community College. She hopes to move to Portland in the next few years to obtain a degree in criminal justice as an immigration lawyer or attend culinary school as a pastry chef.

She is the daughter of Shirley Perry and volunteers for the English as a Second Language program.

Talent: hip hop dance, “Gimme Dat”

Platform: Candlelighters Foundation.

Sydney Dufka, 17, of Arch Cape is home-schooled, and is applying to study at Portland State University, Cornish College of the Arts or DePaul University to pursue a bachelor’s dergree in fine arts in costume design with a minor in women’s studies. She has been involved with the Oregon Children’s Theatre’s Young Professionals program.

She is the daughter of Rand and Teresa Dufka.

Talent: Jazz vocal, “Secret Love.”

Platform: Defining the Face of Miss America for Today’s Young Woman.

Desiree Hollyman, 17, is a senior at Seaside High School and this is her third year in the Miss Clatsop County Scholarship Program. She works on the mentoring program, “Amazing!” at Broadway Middle School. On graduation, she plans to attend community college, then transfer to a state university to earn a master’s degree in child psychology and become a middle school counselor.

She is the daughter of Debbie Hollyman.

Talent: lyrical dance, “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis.

Platform: “Amazing! A mentoring program.”

Erin Chapman, 19, of Seaside is attending Oregon State University. She graduated from Seaside High School in 2011 as valedictorian. She spent her junior year as a Rotary exchange student in Thailand.

At OSU?she is leaning toward a degree in psychology and is interested in a career within the criminal justice system.

She is the daughter of John and Karen Chapman.

Talent: piano, “Music of the Night.”

Platform: promoting art in schools.

Miss Outstanding Teen

Platform: bullying.

Ashley Allen, 15, is a sophomore at Tillamook High School

Talent: clarinet, “Sleeping Beauty Waltz.”

Platform: Habitat for Humanity.

Hannah Bacon, 16, is a junior at Seaside High School.

Talent: contemporary dance, “Battlefield” by Jordan Sparks.

Platform: funding for St. Jude’s Hospital.

Chelsea Palmerton, 16, is a junior at Astoria High School.

Talent: vocal, “My Heart will Go On.”

Platform: support our troops.

Anna Kaim, 13, an eighth-grader at Broadway Middle School.

Talent: jazz dance, “Knocking on Wood.”

Platform: Sleep apnea awareness.

Giselle Pincetich, 15, is a freshman at Seaside High School.

Talent: drum solo, “Wipe Out”

Platform: children and teen foster care awareness.

Jessica Brown, 15, a sophomore at Seaside High School.

Talent: acro dance, “Who’s That Chick.”

Platform: American Diabetes Association.
