SEASIDE In Norse mythology, Valhalla is where elite warriors who died honorably in combat wait to engage in the battle to end all battles.

In coastal Seaside, however, Valhalla Cross Fitness School of Combat is frequented by those battling to be in top physical shape.

We were going to go with a Japanese samurai theme, said Ira Evansen, who opened the mixed martial arts (MMA) gym last summer. But this is a huge Scandinavian community. He decided giving the school a Norse theme.

To that end, the Valhalla logo depicts a Valkyrie, Norse mythologys chooser of the slain, an entity that decides which heroes will die in battle.

Evansen grew up in Cannon Beach. There, as a young man he found himself getting into trouble out of sheer boredom. Most of the kids around here dont have much to do, he said.

Later, he traveled to California, Texas and Seattle, where he became involved in MMA sparring. He found the focus empowering. Its kind of a lifestyle, he said. Theres a lot of good camaraderie.

MMA is an increasingly popular form of sports that involves the use of various martial arts combat techniques in contests between opponents.

Evansen offers instruction in Muay Thai (a type of martial art discipline), kickboxing, submission wrestling and more.

Hes a professional MMA fighter, said Lexie Hallahan, who, in addition to being the owner and director of Seasides Northwest Womens Surf Camps, handles marketing for Valhalla. Hes really focused on training people. He has four or five instructors working with him right now.

In August, Valhalla joined Seaside Stop and Go and ViReal Studios Video Production Co. to sponsor Beach Brawls Rumble at the Beach in the Seaside Convention Center. The event featured sparring among regional MMA fighters.

Still, Valhalla isnt just about martial arts, said Evansen. A certified CrossFit trainer, Evansen offers a number of fitness classes and programs, including a Running Club, Alphafit (featuring a workout of the day), Cardio Smash, Restorative Yoga and open gym sessions.

Ira has a real diverse program, said Hallahan, who participates in Valhallas fitness classes. I just turned 50 and Im in the best shape of my life.

I think a lot of people are always trying to find fun ways to get fit. The Alphafit classes are like having a personal trainer, but youre always in this fun, high-energy atmosphere. Every day its a different workout. Hes got us climbing ropes up to the ceiling.

The Alphafit classes offer a variety of components, including strength training, cardio, gymnastics and boxing, said Hallahan. Every day, you come in and look at the board to see what the workout for the day is.

Those who participate in the classes range in age from their 20s to their 50s, said Hallahan.

Valhalla is at 2793 U.S. Hwy. 101.
