Google appears to be expanding in The Dalles.

The city has issued a permit to the company for a new 15,000 square-foot data storage warehouse.

Google already has two data centers on its 37-acre property. About 150 people are employed locally, plus dozens of contractors.

There’s room for a third data center, but the 15,000 square-foot building would not be a full-scale expansion.

In a filing with the city, Google indicated only an extra five people would work at the new center. It is expected to operate around the clock.

Google chose The Dalles for its first large data center in 2006. It now has similar centers in Iowa, Georgia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Finland and Belgium.

While the expansion is good for the local economy, Google appears to have decided not to grow much more in the area.

It passed up an option to buy 80 acres of land next to the existing site.
