Babe Ruth Roundup: Centralia 13s Win Second Game

Published 5:00 pm Thursday, July 21, 2011

Centralia didnt take advantage of every free base that came its way, but still managed a comfortable 11-4 win over Pasco to improve to 2-0 in the pool play portion of the 13-year-old Southern Washington Babe Ruth Tournament Thursday afternoon at Ed Wheeler Field.

Dominic Petrozzi took over on the mound in the second inning for Centralia and allowed just one hit the rest of the way without an earned run.

It was so huge that Dominic could come in and do what he did, so we could save pitchers for tomorrow, Centralia coach Kevin Wasson said.

The key for Centralia, though, was the bevy of free bases doled out by Pasco: three hit batters, six walks, 11 errors and a balk that scored leadoff Hub City hitter Nolan Wasson in the first inning. The tournament hosts went on to plate 5 runs in the first frame, with Jordan Woods single the only credited hit.

Kieran Bredeson had two hits and 2 RBIs, knocking a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. He also brought in a run with a single in the 5-run sixth, which started with three consecutive errors and featured an RBI single from Garrett Hicks.

Centralia will now face Thurston County in its final pool play game at 7 p.m. tonight.

Were right where we want to be, Wasson said, but we need to come out and win one tomorrow.

Kennewick Edges MSH

Mount Saint Helens took a decent lead early on, but couldnt hold on in a 9-5 loss to Kennewick Thursday at Centralias Ed Wheeler Field in the 13-year-old Southern Washington Babe Ruth Tournament.

Jackson Kuzminsky and Cody Anderson each knocked singles in the first inning, and Connor Vermilyea drove them home with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch to put the Lewis County squad up 3-0 after one. Mount Saint Helens added 2 runs in the second to lead 5-0, but Kennewick scratched out a run in the bottom of the frame, tied it up with a big third and pulled ahead for good with a 3-run fourth inning.

Vermilyea finished the game 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a double, Anderson went 2-4 with a double and an RBI and Kuzminsky finished 1-3.

Mount Saint Helens (1-1 pool play) faces Hazel Dell Metro at 1 p.m. today.

14s: Kelso Trumps Centralia

TUMWATER Centralia scored its lone run in the first inning here Thursday in an 8-1 pool play loss to Kelso in the 14-year-old Southern Washington Babe Ruth Tournament.

Gavin Kerner knocked a triple in the first frame, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Monohon for the Hub City crew. Centralia, however, committed two-out errors in three different innings to provide Kelso with all the breathing room it needed.

Centralia had six hits in the game and takes on Kennewick at noon today.

Centralia 15s Improve to 2-0 at State

KELSO Centralias 15-year-old All-Stars moved to 2-0 in pool play at the Southern Washington Babe Ruth Tournament here Thursday with a 5-1 win over Richland.

Chuck McKeever led the way offensively with a pair of doubles, while pitcher Maxx Waring helped his own cause with a pair of hits. Ty Housden added a triple, and Patrick Neeley had Centralias only other hit.

The pitching and defense was good, but were still struggling with our hitting, Centralia coach Mike Housden said. Were seeing a lot of off-speed stuff, and were just having a hard time adjusting.

Waring tossed a complete game and held Richland to four hits.

He kept the ball in the strike zone, and stayed ahead of hitters, Housden said. He let our defense play behind him, and thats what he wanted to do.

Centralia will face host Kelso at 7 p.m. tonight in both teams final pool play game.
