TRACK: Astoria girls lead

FOREST GROVE – Day 1 of the Cowapa League track and field championships is complete, and the Astoria Fishermen already have five league champions.

Finals were held in nine events Thursday at Pacific University in Forest Grove, and the Fishermen won five. The meet concludes today at Pacific.
The Astoria girls racked up big points, with three athletes winning league titles.
On the track, freshman Ani Graves won the 3,000 meters in 11 minutes, 9.52 seconds, outkicking Tia Carnahan of Scappoose (11:14.16). Seaside’s Kristen Farmer placed third, and Astoria’s Aurora Olson finished fourth.

Astoria senior Chelsey Olson – ranked second in the state in the javelin – will be aiming for big points in next week’s state meet in Eugene, as the Fisherman senior won Thursday’s competition with a throw of 115 feet.
Seaside’s Morgan Bowles and Riley Tadei placed fourth and fifth, respectively, and Astoria senior Megan Park was sixth.
And the Lady Fishermen weren’t done, as Alexis Mather cleared 4-10 to win the high jump.
Seaside senior Kai Davidson was second in the long jump (14-8) and placed fourth in the high jump, while Astoria’s Katie Leino – who had the fastest preliminary time in the 100 meters – finished third in the long jump, just ahead of teammate Kerri Hilton.
Astoria added two more victories on the boys’ side.
Gael Marin ran a fast 9:35.92 to win the 3,000 meters, well ahead of Banks’ Matthew Borchers (9:50.51).
Seaside’s Jefferson Farmer was fourth and Christian Gramson of Astoria took fifth.
Favored to win the long jump today, Astoria’s Dylan Crownover had his first victory of the meet in the triple jump final, soaring 40-81/2.
Astoria teammates Nate Hamilton and Kai Vaughn added points by finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put, and fifth and sixth in the discus.
Seaside’s Lucas Clark was second in the discus (129-8); Conner Smith cleared 11-6 for second in the pole vault; and David Ward was third in the triple jump.
