Bike racks coming, Zipcar space moving

New bike racks and removal of the Zipcar parking space from Spruce Street near the tennis courts are part of a parking and traffic management plan approved Feb. 28 by the Cannon Beach City Council.
Five sets of bike racks will be placed throughout the city over several years, because of the cost to install them, said Mark See, public works director.
The first set will be at the Lagoon Trail on East Second Street near the viewing platform. To purchase the rack and install it in concrete will cost about $1,500, See said.
The racks will be handy for those who ride their bikes to the trail, where bikes arent allowed, he said. The other locations will be:
Whale Park, at Third and Hemlock streets;
Public restrooms, North Spruce and East Second streets;
Skate park, on the northeast corner near the dike road; and
South side of West Delta and South Hemlock streets.
Installed last year on a trial basis, a parking space reserved for Zipcars, a car-sharing service available in Portland, has had little use, said City Planner Rain mar Bartl. Although the recommendation in the management plan was to remove it from Spruce Street altogether, Mayor Mike Morgan suggested that it be moved around the corner to East Second Street.
Because more use of the Zipcar space was observed during the peak tourist times in late July and August, the space may be moved to the summer overflow parking area near the recycling depot. Or, it may be placed near the proposed electric car charging station planned to go east of the public restrooms when they are remodeled.
It will cost $200 to remove the printing and the sign at the space.
