Obituaries: Gerald D. Percey, Jr.

Published 4:00 pm Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Born on March 16, 1959 in Port Angeles, WA to Gerald Sr. and Mary Jo Percey, Gerald D. Percey, Jr., the middle child of three children, passed away peacefully on December 8th, 2010 in Portland, OR.

After a wet and windy young childhood in Fort Stevens, OR, Jerry’s family relocated to Aloha when he was nine years old. He spent his schooling years making people laugh, charming everyone he met, and causing just a little bit of trouble while receiving an education in welding at Beaverton public schools.

After roaming Oregon and Northern California for a couple years and the birth of a daughter in 1984, he moved to Seaside in 1986.

Jerry took pride in his skill as a welder. We will think of him every time we drive past the running soldier monument on Commercial Street in downtown Astoria; Jerry re-attached the bayonet the soldier carries many years ago after it had broken off. Jerry awed customers and colleagues alike with both his talent as well as his innovations; he was known for his original creations in marine fabrication and was respected for consistently exceeding expectations on projects he was given. Jerry’s pride was customer satisfaction. After spending a number of years working for Northwest Propeller in the early 1990’s, he began working for Bergerson Construction in Astoria in 1997, where he worked until his passing.

Jerry met his wife, Sandra, in 1993, in Seaside. They married in Reno, NV, and together with Sandra’s four children, Megan, Bryan, Kyle and Trevor, and Jerry’s daughter Holly, they combined families and added Spencer in 1994.

They lived in Seaside until 2003 when they moved back to where Jerry spent those wet and windy days of childhood; Jerry lived in Fort Stevens until his passing on Wednesday.

If it were Jerry’s choice, his memorial service would be held on fishing vessels in the South Jetty. However a more practical memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 18th at the Shilo Inn at Young’s Bay in Warrenton, OR, and there is an open invitation extended to all who would like to share in Jerry’s remembrance.

Survivors: Jerry was loved by everyone and will be missed by many. He is survived by his parents, Gerald Sr. and Mary Jo Percey of Aloha, OR; his wife, Sandra Percey of Hammond, OR; a brother and his wife, Doug and Lana Percey of Nevada City, CA; a sister and her husband, Shelley Percey and Steve Kuske of Sherwood, OR; his children, Megan Darr, Bryan Darr, Kyle Shepherd, and Spencer Percey, of OR; Pvt. 1st. Cl. Trevor Shepherd, USMC currently of OK, and Holly Percey of Hartford, CT.
