The Columbia River Maritime Museum will present author Dennis Powers at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Powers, who has written 10 books, the last five about the sea, will focus on his most recent book, “Tales of the Seven Seas: The Escapades of Captain Dynamite Johnny O’Brien.”
The presentation will include stories of this sea captain of old, who was based in Portland and Seattle and sailed every type of ship imaginable from the late 1860s to the late 1920s. Powers will emphasize the captain’s strong Astoria and Portland connections and describe what it was like to pilot ships over the Columbia River Bar in the days before sonar, radar and other aids.
When O’Brien was based in Seattle, he captained steamships into the north, met Jack London, and also became an Alaskan folk hero in the process. Powers’ presentation will be accompanied by rare vintage pictures.
Dennis Powers lives in Ashland.
