It’s National Park Week … so go to the park.
Entrance fees to Lewis and Clark National Historical Park (more commonly known as Fort Clatsop) will be waived for the entire week, from now through Sunday.
The park also has an annual pass on sale. When National Park Week ends, for $10 a year you can purchase a colorful annual pass and gain free admission for yourself and three additional adults anytime you visit the park. The passes are on sale at the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center front desk during park open hours.
Meanwhile, it’s a busy week for the park:
? On Earth Day, Thursday, the park will kick off several new temporary exhibits in the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center. The exhibits will offer visitors information about climate change science and suggestions on how to live more sustainably. There will also be free brochures accompanying the exhibits.
“Arrange for Change” is an exhibit that has traveled throughout the U.S., and provides an overview of the global climate change issue and how it will affect national parks. The exhibit was created by John Morris from the National Park Service, Alaska Regional Office in cooperation with staff from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The “Sammy the Salmon Confronts Change” exhibit is a display geared toward children. It tells the story of how salmon could be affected by climate change in the Pacific Northwest. Based on various scientific reports including the “Independent Scientific Advisory Board, Climate Change Impacts on Columbia River Basin Fish and Wildlife,” it shows how Sammy struggles to survive through warmer streams, less food, and increased predation, but offers hope through children who take the Salmon Pledge and choose to live more sustainably.
The exhibit panels were illustrated by Michael Liang, a graphic artist and park ranger from North Cascades National Park and produced by Will George, a park ranger from Lewis and Clark NHP.
The “Sammy the Salmon Confronts Change” exhibit will also be on display through the Lewis and Clark NHP website on Earth Day.
? Junior Ranger Day is Saturday. Kids can come to the park to take part in the Junior Ranger program. There will be special badges and buttons available all week. The program is free, and available throughout National Park Week.
