This week, candy makers at Seaside’s Phillips Candy will whip up as much as 300 pounds of saltwater taffy a day, while down Broadway, amusement park workers will guide riders by the hundreds to a prized seat behind the wheel of a bumper car. And all around town, as the carousel cranks to a melodious start, and the salt air combines with the smells of corn dogs and caramel corn, the population of Oregon’s first beach resort will multiply by four, even five, times. It’s spring break for much of the state.
