Obituaries: Ernest Francis Luoma

Ernest Francis Luoma, 89, of Milwaukie, formerly of Seaside, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010, in Milwaukie.

He was born June 5, 1920, in Pittsburgh, and adopted by Gust and Hilda Maria (Wiirre) Luoma.

In 1938, he graduated from Seaside High School.

He served for four years in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater and attained the rank of staff sargeant. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Asian-Pacific Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Battle Stars, the Good Conduct medal, four overseas service bars, one service stripe, the Distinguished Unit Badge and World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Luoma was the secretary/business agent for the International Woodworkers of America for 16 years. He also did construction for several years. He retired in 1969 due to ill health. After spending most of his life in Clatsop county, he sold his home and moved to Milwaukie in 1988.

He is survived by three nieces, Carolyn Miller Curnow of Hemet, Calif., Marwayne Miller Karnoski of Everett, Wash., and Ilona Salminen Johnson of Eugene; and numerous great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Helen Grabovick Salminen and Freda Margaret Grabovick Miller; and a half sister, Sophie Michelson Kangas.

At Mr. Luoma’s request no service will be held.

Inurnment will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
