Girls Basketball: Warrenton 43, Rainier 33

FOREST GROVE – The win streak is alive and well, Brooklyn Campbell got her scoring record, and the Warrenton Lady Warriors began their post-season quest for a state championship with a 43-33 win over Rainier Saturday night in Lewis & Clark League playoff action at Pacific University.

The win secured the No. 1 seed to the state playoffs for the Warriors.

Campbell poured in 20 points to become Warrenton’s all-time leading scorer for points in a single season, breaking DeeDee Arnall’s record of 589 set in 2001-02. Campbell ran her season total to 596, and her career total stands at 1,911.

The Warriors improve to 26-0 overall, and will host Cascade Christian (17-10) in a Sweet 16 playoff Friday (tentative). The winner moves on the state tournament quarterfinals in Salem and will play either Sheridan (19-7) or Vale (18-7) Wednesday, March 3 (1:30 p.m.).

Campbell hit two 3-pointers near the end of the third quarter, snaping a tie as the Warriors pulled away.

Maddy Smotherman finished with 13 points, and Payton Hummell had six points and 12 rebounds.

Corbett 41, Knappa 33SCAPPOOSE – Win or lose Saturday, the Knappa Lady Loggers were already in the Sweet 16.

Unfortunately for the Loggers, they will head to the state playoffs on a losing note, as fourth-place Corbett upset third-place Knappa 41-33 in a Northwest League playoff Saturday at Scappoose High School.

The Loggers went 0-2 in the league playoffs to secure their spot in the Sweet 16. Knappa (14-12) will travel to Salem Academy (21-3) for a state playoff Friday, with a trip to Pendleton awaiting the winner.

Country Christian 45, Jewell 44McMINNVILLE – Jewell held a 34-26 lead entering the fourth quarter, but a win just wasn’t in the cards for the Blue Jays Saturday night, as Country Christian rallied for a 45-44 overtime win in the Casco League’s contest for the No. 1 seed.

As a result, Jewell (17-8 overall) will have to settle for the No. 2 seed and will host Days Creek (14-11) 7 p.m. Tuesday with the winner playing at Portland Waldorf Friday.

Amber Meier’s jump shot with 11 seconds left in overtime gave the Jays a 44-43 lead, but the Cougars came back and scored on a layup from Ashley Axmaker with two seconds remaining.

Jewell’s Jesika Kaczenski scored 15 points to go with 14 rebounds, five steals and three assists, while Angel Ulm added 13 points, four assists and three steals. Meier had eight points and six boards, Jeannie DiMaggio finished with eight rebounds, and Thai Curtis had six points and five steals for Jewell.

Jewell 36, Perrydale 32McMINNVILLE – Jewell defeated Perrydale for the third time this season, 36-32, in a Casco League playoff Friday night at McMinnville.

Perrydale closed to within one point of the Jays in the final minute, but Jewell made its free throws down the stretch to hang on for the win.

Jesika Kaczenski scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Jays, who were 16-of-31 from the free throw line.

Ilwaco 61, White Salmon 31KELSO, Wash. – The Ilwaco girls basketball team had all the points it would need by halftime, as the Fishermen built a 33-11 first half lead on their way to a 61-31 win over White Salmon in a Southwest Washington 1A District girls playoff at Kelso Saturday.

Ilwaco will play La Center at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Kelso.

Ashley Tapio had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Kenzi Wirkkala added 10 points and 11 boards for Ilwaco.

Naselle 47, North Beach 29CENTRALIA, Wash. – Naselle outscored North Beach 32-8 in the first half and hammered the Lady Hyaks 47-29 in a loser-out District IV girls playoff in Centralia Saturday.

The Comets led by as much as 29-6 in the second period on their way to the lopsided victory. North Beach had defeated Naselle twice in league play earlier in the season.

Carley Kitzman led Naselle with 14 points.
