On February 16, 2010, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will celebrate its 142nd Birthday. Founded in New York on February 16, 1868, the Elks now have over one million members and 2000 lodges nation wide. The Order is dedicated to the community and its citizens. Programs include Scholarships, Hoot Shoot, Soccer Shoot, Veterans care and many programs for youth. Casey Eye Institute and Meadowood Springs Speech and Hearing Camp are the Oregon major state projects. The “Crown Jewel” of the order is the Elks National Home and Retirement Center in Bedford, Virginia, which has operated for over one hundred years. The Order publishes the Elks Magazine, which not only highlights local lodges and charitable events, but also focuses on current news and history of the United States.
Oregon has 56 lodges. The first National Elks Convention in Oregon was held in Portland in 1912. A great story from that time was that four Elks members walked 2223 miles to the convention from Brookfield, Missouri. When they reached Portland they were met by the Elks Administration Band and 2000 citizens. The National Convention for 2009 was also held in Portland, Oregon.
The Elks is a private fraternal organization. Membership is by application. For information please call the Seaside Elks Lodge at 503-738-6651.
