Heifer International Night Out takes place Wednesday

The Astoria High School Senior Class and several local restaurants will present Heifer International Night Out during dinner Wednesday at T Paul’s Urban Cafe, Silver Salmon Grille, Dairy Queen, Rusty Cup, Bridgewater Bistro and Fort George Brewery and Public House. Portions of the proceeds at these restaurants Wednesday will be donated to Heifer International on behalf of Astoria.

Heifer International is a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable agriculture, education, equity, disease prevention and disaster rehabilitation and helps people attain sustainable food sources and income. For more than 60 years, Heifer International has provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income. Since 1944, it has helped 48 million people through training in livestock development and livestock gifts that multiply.

AHS students are also using the Heifer International catalog for one more week to get orders for gifts that keep giving. Every gift of a cow, goat, flock of chicks or hive of honeybees provides transformational change. The gift also multiplies. Through Heifer International’s Pass on the Gift, each family that receives livestock agrees to pass on the first female offspring to another family.

“The idea that kids can truly help change lives is awe-inspiring,” AHS Activities Director Jenni Newton said. “This project is about learning planning skills, communication and compassion.”
