Balkan Cabaret with Mary Sherhart is coming from Seattle to perform Saturday at the Clatsop Community College Performing Arts Center, 588 16th St. From 3 to 5 p.m. there will be a cultural presentation on Bosnia, Bulgaria and the Balkans, followed by a folk song/folk dance teaching session with Mary Sherhart and Susan Reagal. There is no cost for this part of the program. At 7 p.m. Saturday, there will be a concert and dance party; admission is $5.

The Balkan Cabaret, brought to Astoria by Carol Newman, with the help of a Clatsop Cultural Trust grant, was formed in 2001 as a collaboration between vocalist Mary Sherhart and the San Francisco area folk dance band Nisava. The group performs traditional ballads and favorite old standards from the cafes and cabarets of Belgrade, Sofia and Sarajevo, and other Balkan cities, from long before the influence of rock and roll. Their performance spans Sevdalinka ballads from Bosnis and Hercogovina, old town Starogradski tunes from Bulgaria and favorites from Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia.
