Obituaries: Charles Richard ‘Dick’ Walter

Charles Richard “Dick” Walter, 80, of Warrenton, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, in Warrenton.
He was born May 16, 1929, in Chico, Calif., to Charles H. Walter and Lila M. (Skidmore) Walter.
A 1947 graduate of Seaside High School, he was student body president. He attended Oregon State College for one year.
On Aug. 26, 1951, he married Marilyn Preston in Portland. She survives, residing in Warrenton.
For five years, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a lieutenant junior grade and served in Korea in 1952.
Mr. Walter worked with his parents in a motel in Seaside and was a State Farm agent in Seaside. He opened Warrenton Builders Supply in August 1968.
He served on Seaside Fire Department for 25 years and was assistant chief. He was a member of the Seaside Jaycees, where he twice was given the Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of the “secret 7” who started the Seaside Civic and Convention Center, and was on the board for several years. He was a member of the Seaside Rotary, was on the Warrenton Planning Commission, was involved with the Miss Oregon Pageant and helped start Seaside Kids Inc., where he coached several years. He was also a member of the Seaside Elks, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was inducted into the Seaside Hall of fame in 2004 for the 1946 football team.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Debra Kim Lacheln of Longview, Wash., and Dana and Bruce Holt of Warrenton; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig R. and Debra Walter of Warrenton; 14 grandchildren, Erin Daniels and her husband Quentin, of Fort Lewis, Wash., Eric Holt and his wife, Jessica, of Eugene, Nicole, Brandon, Ashley and Christian Holt, Alison Bartlett and Ricky Walter, all of Warrenton, Jeremy Howell and his wife, Angela, of Rainier, Rebecca Fountain and her husband, Thom, of Kelso, Wash., Julie Heuer and her husband, Brian, of Scappoose, Angie Kneeland and her husband, Danny, of St. Helens, Jennifer Painter of Longview and Ryan Painter and his wife, Misty, of Rainier; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
