State baseball and Shrine football on weekend agenda

The Astoria Ford/Clatsop Post 12 baseball team will open the Oregon Junior Baseball state tournament today in Pleasant Hill, against Westview at 2:30 p.m. The winner will play either Southridge or Churchill at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Thurston High School.

Shrine Game SaturdayThe rosters are set for the annual East-West All-Star Shrine football game, scheduled for Saturday at Bulldog Stadium in Baker City.

The game at 1 p.m. broadcast on Fox Sports Northwest, features the top seniors in the state from the 2008 season, from the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A levels.

The West squad will include Trevor Puckett from 4A state champion Astoria, along with John Benthin and Doug Montgomery from 2A state champion Knappa. Astoria’s Jordan Poyer was also selected to play, but Poyer is in Corvallis preparing for the 2009 season at Oregon State.

Knappa’s Aaron Thornton will be one of four coaches for the West team. A graduate of Central Linn, Thornton played in the 1999 Shrine game.
