Letter: Grass roots movement
Published 5:00 pm Thursday, July 9, 2009
I have lived in Seaside for the past four years. One of the enjoyments I receive is being on the beach on the Oregon coast. I am unhappy with the recent leveling of the dunes with bulldozers along the promenade.
I understand an annual event is to level the dunes in a three to four block radius, but to level 12 or 13 blocks, which is what occurred this year – come on, folks. Most places are trying to protect and preserve the dunes, not destroy them.
Many other places that I have been have signs on the dunes asking folks to stay off the dunes to protect them. The roots of the grass that grows in the dunes holds the sand in place so when the wind picks up, as it frequently does on the Northwest Coast, it doesn’t blow into peoples’ faces or onto their cars or homes.
Who benefits from this nonsense? Who paid for the work to have bulldozers leveling for two weeks? The businesses that own property along the promenade, who want their patrons to see the beach from their rooms, as well as private home owners.
If the patrons don’t go out of their rooms because the sand is blowing in their faces, then they won’t be patrons at local establishments.
What do you think? My perspective on this issue is but one. I would like to hear from you. I am interested in a democratic process which includes all viewpoints. I can be reached at luckyhombre@gmail.com
