Just a few days after the Seaside High School swim team swept the boys and girls Cowapa League Championships, the Gulls repeated their performance at the Astoria Aquatic Center by defeating eight teams to take the District 1 – 4A Championship title Saturday, February 14. North Coast rival Astoria came in second in both the boys and girls divisions.

For the Gulls the district meet marked the first time in eleven years Seaside High School swept both the boys and girls titles. The girls racked up 242 points to Astorias 214, while the boys scored a total of 255 points to the Fishermens 224.

Individually, Carlie Gilligan won the 200 intermediate medley (2:24.57) and the 100-yard breastroke (1:13.55) for the girls, and Cole Swartz won the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.19) for the boys. The Seaside girls also won the 200 Medley Relay (2:05.21) and the 200 Freestyle Relay (1:53.90).

The Gulls Stephanie Hanthorn secured second place in the 100 (59.39) and 200-yard (2:14.14) freestyle events, as did Hunter Beaudoin for the boys in the 50-yard freestyle (24.35). Hanthorn and Beaudoin are wildcard contestants for the state swim meet. Cole Schwarz and Carlie Gilligan, as well as the girls 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams, are automatic qualifiers for state.

Astorias two wins came in the 100-yard backstroke from Hannah Whisler (1:11.55) on the girls side and Jon Sprouse (1:03.20) on the boys side. Both will travel to the state swim meet.

For the girls, Taft ended up third in team scores with 189, followed by Rainier (135), Newport (118), Tillamook (72) and Toledo (30). For the boys, Rainier was third with 199 team points, followed by Newport (175), Tillamook (108), Taft (88), Scappoose (87) and Toledo (74).

Seasides sheer numbers helped them immensely on the team scores, but the individual talents of their swimmers should not be discounted. As a young team, they have much to look forward to in the years ahead.
