Employees of Wauna Federal Credit Union helped the Clatsop Community Action Food Bank feed hungry families during the holiday season by collecting food and funds during the holidays. The Astoria and Warrenton branches accepted 176.4 pounds of non-perishable food from Nov. 1 until the end of 2008. Employees and members also gifted more than $1,700 to CCA programs through a checking account drive and employee donations.

“Our goal is to inspire other citizens and organizations to keep our hungry and cold neighbors in mind during the winter months. We plan to offer whatever assistance is available,” said Aimee Hunter, WFCU marketing director.

The Clatsop Community Action Food Bank distributed more than 803,000 pounds of food to hungry families with 18 local agencies located throughout the county during the 2007-2008 fiscal year.

Twenty-five percent of Clatsop County residents qualified for emergency food assistance. Of that, 40 percent were children and 20 percent were seniors. During the 2008 holidays, the CCA Food Bank worked with partners and supplied 450 Thanksgiving food baskets and 1,220 Christmas food baskets to families in need.

Wauna Federal Credit Union is headquartered in Clatskanie, and has branches in Astoria, Clatskanie, St. Helens, Vernonia and Warrenton. Everyone in Clatsop or Columbia counties is eligible for membership. For information, call (800) 773-3236.
