A tribute is planned Sunday for longtime Astoria entertainer Roger Martin, who died in the Thanksgiving night fire.

The event has been organized after authorities have confirmed that it was 60-year-old Martin’s body in the wreckage of the Astoria Florist Shop, at 951 Commercial St., one of five businesses destroyed in the fire. The cause has been ruled accidental and traced to a hot plate and other electrical appliances in the store.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his identity Tuesday and reported Martin died of smoke inhalation, said Alan Oja, Astoria’s assistant police chief.
The performer was a stalwart with the Astor Street Opry Company and played Captain Jack in the summer productions of “Shanghaied in Astoria.”

Board members and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Sunday at the ASOC Playhouse, 129 West Bond St., to pay tribute to Martin.
Organizers say the memorial will be a casual gathering. Friends and loved ones will be invited to speak and share stories about Martin. Refreshments will be provided. (It will not be a potluck, as previously announced.)
For information, call the ASOC ticket line at (503) 325-6104.
The ASOC has also announced that despite the death of Martin, the group’s Christmas show will go on and a replacement actor will take Martin’s planned role. “Scrooged In Astoria” will open as planned Thursday, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Show time is 7:30 p.m.
On Thursday nights all “Scrooged” tickets are half price, and can be purchased by calling the ASOC ticket line.
ASOC’s 13th annual Starving Artist Faire will also be held this weekend from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. This year, the event will be held for the first time at the new Lum’s Auto Center in Warrenton, 1605 S.E. Ensign Lane, located behind Home Depot.
