Knappa keeps the win streak going with romp over Corbett

CORBETT – Knappa remained perfect on the season (7-0 overall, 2-0 in league) with another easy victory Friday night, this time a 47-6 romp over Corbett.
The Northwest League title – still up for grabs – will be decided over the next two weeks, when the Loggers host both Nestucca and Portland Christian.
Missing Tevan Klauser from the lineup, the Loggers inserted Eddie Corder, who responded with a career game. Corder had nine carries for 105 yards and three touchdowns, and caught five passes for 92 yards and two more scores.
Bryan Sablan added a touchdown and 134 yards rushing, while quarterback Cody Strickland completed 12-of-16 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Trevor Oja was 2-for-2 for 30 yards and a TD.
The Loggers rolled up 507 yards in total offense, while holding Corbett under 100.
Tillamook 34, Seaside 12SEASIDE – Rushing touchdowns by Brandon Thomas and Matt Beeler helped Tillamook take a 21-6 halftime lead Friday night, on its way to a 34-12 win over Seaside.
The Gulls had a pair of scoring runs by Jackson Meyer – including a 45-yarder in the fourth quarter – but Thomas and Beeler added touchdown carries in the third period to pull away.
Meyer carried 10 times for 101 yards for Seaside. The Cheesemakers host Astoria this week.
Clatskanie 12, Warrenton 7CLATSKANIE – The Warrenton Warriors came within one minute, 19 seconds of scoring a big upset in the Lewis & Clark League Friday night, but Clatskanie’s Jaron Cruz took away the dreams of victory with a late 2-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 12-7 win.
The Warriors scored on their opening possession of the game, as Josh Wheatley capped a seven-play, 60-yard march with a 32-yard touchdown toss to Chris Legler.
Clatskanie pulled to within 7-6 late in the first quarter, on a 1-yard run by Cruz.
“I was real proud of the kids – they played with their backs to the wall,” said Warrenton coach John Mattila. “We just didn’t move the ball on offense in the second half.”
The Warriors had just 28 yards rushing in the third quarter, and 12 in the fourth. Warrenton finished with 160 yards total offense, to Clatskanie’s 363.
Mattila said the difference in the game was Clatskanie quarterback K.C. Taylor, who rushed for 145 yards on 22 carries, in addition to throwing for 95 yards.
Warrenton falls to 1-2 in league (tied for third with Clatskanie and Neah-Kah-Nie), and will host Vernonia Friday.
Jewell 52, Portland Lutheran 40JEWELL – Jewell pulled into a third-place tie in the Casco League with a 52-40 win over Portland Lutheran Friday night.

La Center 42, Ilwaco 20ILWACO, Wash. – Touchdown tosses from Rey Sanchez to Kolby Kirby and Justin Short put Ilwaco up 14-0 in the first 14 minutes of play, but La Center senior Chris Concannon ran wild after that, as the Wildcats sank the Fishermen 42-20 in Trico League football Friday night.
Concannon racked up 364 yards rushing on 35 carries (10.4 per carry), and scored five touchdowns, including scoring runs of 63 and 55 yards.
Skyler Olson had a 90-yard kickoff return for the Fishermen, who drop to 0-3 in the Trico League.
Seattle Lutheran 22, Naselle 19SEATTLE – Seattle Lutheran scored a come-from-behind victory over Naselle Saturday afternoon, as the Saints upset the Comets 22-19 in a nonleague game at West Seattle Stadium.
Seattle Lutheran’s Ryan Morgan scored on a 3-yard run with 2:03 remaining to complete the comeback for the Saints, who lost to Naselle (42-7) in the state playoffs last year.
Morgan had two touchdowns and 74 yards rushing for the Saints, while Alan Erickson had two rushing touchdowns for Naselle. Erickson and Nick Hines combined for 194 yards on the ground.
Tony Fletcher added a 43-yard scoring run for the Comets, who held a 15-6 lead at halftime.
Boys Golf: Ilwaco wins district title by 103 strokesTUMWATER, Wash. – Ryan Kukula edged fellow sophomore and teammate Patrick Whealdon by two strokes to win District IV medalist honors, and Jack Whealdon and Todd Oakes finished third and fourth, respectively, as Ilwaco dominated the tournament at Tumwater Valley Golf Course Thursday and Friday.
The team score for the defending state champions over the two-day, 36-hole event was 775, a whopping 106 strokes better than La Center.
All four of Ilwaco’s top golfers easily qualified for next spring’s state tournament and Bobby Byrd (12th) and Kyle Breckenridge (15th) will be alternates. It was the third straight District IV crown for the Fishermen.
“The kids really played well,” said Ilwaco coach Dan Whealdon. “It was fun to watch Ryan and Patrick compete for the championship on Friday. Ryan came in with a four-stroke lead, but they were back and forth until Ryan won by two strokes. Both guys are friends, but they were in tournament-mode and really focused. In the end they had fun competing.”
Kukula shot 70-74 (144) and Patrick Whealdon carded 74-72 (146).
Jack Whealdon, defending district champion the past two seasons, got into some trouble the first day with a rare four-putt hole and a costly out-of-bounds drive, but recovered well to fire a 33 on the back nine on Friday. His score was 78-73 (151).
Oakes finished with 81-74 (155). With all four golfers returning, the Fishermen will be big favorites to repeat as champions at the state tournament, May 27-28.
Volleyball: Warriors win tournamentADNA, Wash. – The Warrenton volleyball team defeated Napavine 25-21, 25-17 in the title match of the Adna Tournament Saturday for first place in the tourney.
The Warriors entered the championship bracket as a No. 4 seed out of pool play, where Warrenton opened with a 26-24 win over Naselle.
Stevenson def. IlwacoSTEVENSON, Wash. – Ilwaco had lost 3-0 to the Bulldogs two weeks ago and dropped the first two games of their Trico League volleyball match at Stevenson Thursday, but the Lady Fishermen played one of their best games of the season. Unfortunately for the girls from Stevenson came back to win 25-21 and sweep the match 3-0.
The Fishermen, after the long trip up the Columbia River Gorge played two “lackluster” games to begin the fray, losing convincingly 25-9 and 25-8 before mounting their near comeback in the final contest. Coach Marie Green said, “In the huddle before our third game, the girls said they didn’t want to be embarrassed like they had been in the first two games. We played an amazing third game defensively. Alexa Wirkkala had several key digs against their best outside hitter (left-hander Bailey Nelson).”
Charlotte Johnson dished out eight assists to lead Ilwaco in that department and Marin McDonnell added an ace, four kills and five digs. Alexa Wirkkala had eight digs, four blocks and two kills and Carley Kitzman chipped in four digs, two kills and two blocks to the Lady Fishermen cause. Brittnee Pattison added two service aces and two digs and Alexis Couch also had two digs, while Sydney Ward contributed a kill, four digs and a block.
Ilwaco is now 0-6 in the Trico and 0-11 for the season, while Stevenson improves to 4-2 in league play and 6-3 for the year. Green concluded by saying, “If we can play like we did in our third game the rest of the season, we have a good chance to knock off a couple of teams.”
Boys soccer: Tillamook 1, Scappoose 0TILLAMOOK – A lone goal by Tillamook freshman Jhoany Mendez midway through the first half separated Tillamook from Scappoose in a Cowapa League clash Friday.
