KNAPPA – The approval rating for the fourth-ranked Knappa football team continues to skyrocket, as the Loggers put together perhaps their best effort of the season Friday night, in a 35-0 route of Vernonia in Logger Bowl ’08.

Knappa’s “Super Charger” from San Diego, Bryan Sablan, took his game to another level in the second half as he scored three touchdowns in a span of seven minutes, nine seconds to put the game away.

The Knappa Loggers (3-0) dominated the time of possession in the first half, rolled up 15 of their 25 first downs in the first two quarters, and defensively shut down and shut out the Loggers of Vernonia.

Knappa rushed for 349 yards on 53 carries, while junior quarterback Cody Strickland was 5-of-8 passing for 54 yards. He also intercepted a pass in the second half.

The Knappa defense limited Vernonia to just three first downs in the first half, 10 for the game. The hometown Loggers highlighted their night by stuffing Vernonia on a fourth-and-goal at the Knappa 1-yard line late in the game to preserve the shutout.

Sablan had 19 carries for 142 yards with TD runs of 10 and 20 yards, and picked off two passes on defense, returning a third quarter pick for a touchdown.

Backfield teammate Tevan Klauser rushed for 110 yards on 15 attempts, and Chris Fulton carried eight times for 62 yards.

Sablan said it all starts up front for the Loggers.

“I have to give credit to my line,” he said. “Big ol’ Jo hn Benthin … they all worked hard at practice all week. I have to give it to them, and I just do my thing.

“We really came together on this one,” Sablan added. “We have some guys injured – Doug Montgomery and C.J. (Thorne) were both out tonight, but we stuck with it, and came out with the victory.”

Knappa was first on the scoreboard, as Klauser capped a seven-play, 60-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

Their next possession was even more impressive, as Sablan and Klauser alternated carries on a 12-play, 70-yard march, with Fulton finishing the drive with another 2-yard plunge.

Sablan really went to work in the second half. On Vernonia’s first possession, Sablan intercepted a Byron Schorzman pass, then capped the ensuing Knappa drive with a 20-yard scoring run.

Less than two minutes later, he was in the end zone again, with a 76-yard interception return.

“I was really hyped up for this game,” said Sablan, who caught four passes for 39 yards. “We have some guys injured, and they’re our leaders, so I needed to step up and be a leader tonight.”

Knappa sophomore kicker Trevor Oja connected on all five extra-point attempts, improving his season total to 14-of-15.

Knappa will likely get a stiffer test this week, when the Loggers travel to Clatskanie.
