The A&E Television Web site for their program “Intervention” (www.aetv.com/intervention) describes the episode “Phillip,” to be shown at 9 p.m. Monday and 1 a.m. Tuesday, as follows:
“A 44-year-old singer and songwriter, Phillip used music to escape the pain of an unstable childhood. He gained fame due to his charisma and musical talents, but Phillip now consumes up to four pints of peppermint schnapps a day. He lost his career, the love of his life, and the respect of his family. Can Phillip break the grip of addiction before he loses the most precious relationship in his life, the one he shares with his 11-year-old daughter?”
What the blurb doesn’t mention is that the show sent Phillip to Astoria Pointe (www.astoriapointe.com), a residential drug and alcohol abuse treatment center on W. Exchange Street, where he spent three months in recovery, according Larry Peterson, the facility’s chief executive officer.
While at Astoria Pointe, Phillip wrote several new songs, said Peterson. Phillip’s daughter was brought up to Astoria for a visit by the show, and he performed the new material for her at the Red Hare on 10th Street. A crew from the show, in Astoria for a few days to film for the episode, also filmed his performance.
Peterson said he has no idea of how much Astoria footage will be used in the “Intervention” show Monday night, but is curious to see it. So is the Ear.
