PORTLAND – The Astoria Ford Junior State baseball team finally found some competition Sunday, as the Fishermen took part in a doubleheader at Wilson.

Wilson won a 12-2 rout in the opener, then squeaked out a 4-3 victory in Game 2.

The Fishermen faced Wilson all-state pitcher Stuart Fewell in Game 1, and Fewell scattered five hits in the seven-inning win.

The teams played just five innings in the second game, with Wilson scoring the game-winner on an infield single in its final at-bat to break a 3-3 tie.

Taylor Landwehr had a strong outing on the mound for Astoria Ford in Game 2, and the Fishermen scored twice in the top of the fifth to tie the game.

Dane Lund drove in one run, and a bases loaded walk to Mason Brause forced in the tying run.

Earlier in the contest, Astoria’s Max Johnson had a run-scoring, two-out single.

Astoria Ford will have four days off before hosting a best two-out-of-three regional playoff vs. a team (to be determined) from the Portland area Friday, game time to be announced.

Up next, the Astoria 13’s travel to The Dalles for the state tournament, which begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

Astoria tacked on two runs in the fourth, when Poyer scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Cody Fox, and Josh Biel raced home on a wild pitch.

Astoria had just three hits in the game.

Astoria 13’s 12, Tualatin Hills 10In a District 1 tournament opener at Aiken Field, the Astoria 13-year-old All-Stars scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 12-10, come-from behind win over Tualatin Hills Friday afternoon.

The Astoria 13’s trailed 7-2 after 41/2 innings before mounting their big comeback.

A run-scoring single by Kyle Kelly and a two-run double from Tony Rudolfi brought Astoria to within 7-6 after four innings.

Tualatin Hills scored one run in the top of the sixth, but Astoria responded with six in the home half of the inning, as Austin Wirkkala drew a one-out walk to start the rally, then scored on a double by Kelly.

Brandan Greenfield and Cody Fox both added RBI singles, and Kyle Lucore capped the scoring with a two-run base hit to left field.

Meanwhile, Josh Biel took over on the mound midway through the fourth inning, and struck out four straight batters before giving way to Kelly in the seventh.

Good news, bad news for Astoria 14’sThe Astoria 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars clinched a spot in the upcoming state tournament (July 16-20) with victories over Southeast Portland and Tualatin Hills Friday in the District 1 tournament at Ernie Aiken Field.

Astoria dropped a 6-0 decision to Tualatin Hills Saturday night, and would have played a rematch with Tualatin Hills Sunday morning for the district championship, with both teams headed to state.

Instead – because four Astoria players were committed to playing for the Knappa Junior State baseball team and this week’s Junior State playoffs – the Astoria 14’s were left with only five players, not enough for a trip to La Grande and the state tournament. Sunday’s championship game was not played.

“The kids were really bummed about it,” said Pat Harber, a coach with Astoria. “They were really disappointed, but we knew that was a possibility even before the tournament. We found out just before (Saturday’s) game.

“I look at it this way – the kids did a great job in the tournament and made a tremendous improvement over the season.”

Tualatin Hills will now head to state as the No. 1 team out of District 1, while Southeast Portland will get the second seed, despite being blown out in both of its district tournament games (11-2 and 16-3).

Tualatin’s Paul Fitzpatrick tossed a two-hit shutout in Saturday’s win over Astoria.

In Astoria’s 3-2 victory over Tualatin Friday night at Aiken Field, the Astorians rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the sixth inning to win in dramatic fashion.

Astoria’s Conor Harber scored the tying run in the bottom of the sixth, as he tripled to the fence, then scored on a throwing error.

Moments later, Evan Cain drove home the eventual game-winner for Astoria, as Dalton Kelly reached base with a double, then scored on Cain’s base hit for the 3-2 lead.

Harber struck out seven and scattered five hits with four walks to pick up the complete-game victory on the mound.

“That was the type of game that fans will talk about for a long time,” coach Harber said. “It was close the whole way, and had the fans on the edge of their seats.”

After Conor Harber’s run-tying score, “Kelly just blasted one to the same place, then Cain comes through with the single,” coach Harber said. “Evan played fantastic, and really all the kids stepped up and made big improvements.”
