KMUN resumes broadcasting after overnight problems

KMUN-FM radio was back on the air Friday as technicians worked through the night to restore service after its transmitter on Megler Mountain had a major component failure.
The Astoria-based station, which broadcasts at 91.9 FM, went off the air about 9 p.m. Thursday and returned about 10 a.m. today. General Manager Dave Hammock and engineer Terry Wilson had earlier feared it may take 24 to 72 hours to get an accurate diagnosis and take delivery of replacement components. Instead, Wilson and a colleague, Carlton Bear, were able to find the problem in a cooling device and fix it this morning.
During the time KMUM was off the air, the lower powered second service, KCPB-FM at 90.9 FM, carried some of the Coast Community Radio programming normally heard on KMUN.
Hammock said he hopes the temporary fix will keep programming on the air until permanent replacement parts are available and can be installed. “Other service interruptions are possible, but we have high hopes this will work,” he said midmorning Friday.
