The city of Astoria’s Historic Landmarks Commission has selected the 2008 recipients of the Dr. Edward Harvey Historic Preservation Award.

There were three commercial property recipients:

? Liberty Restoration Inc. for the Liberty Theater at 1203 Commercial St.;

? Steve and Deborah Mansfield, for the restoration of 1396 Duane St., the Obrien Building:

? Warren Williams for 818 Commercial St., the Spexarth Building.

One residential property received an award: 619 Grand Ave., restored by Mike and Gigi Crowley.

The Lower Columbia Preservation Society will receive the Dr. Edward Harvey Outstanding Community Partner in Historic Preservation award for its members’ commitment to preservation issues in Astoria and the surrounding area.

Two Historic Preservation Certificates of Merit will be presented this year: to Tonquin Resources Ltd. for saving the historic building at 103 14th St.; and to the Union Fish Properties LLC for completion of an adaptive reuse of the Union Fisherman’s Cooperative Packing Co. at 20 Basin St.

The award is presented annually to recognize property owners who have completed exterior restoration or beautification of a building which exemplifies the historical attributes of the building or the architectural heritage of Astoria. The work must have been completed within the last two years. This year’s theme was “This Place Matters.”

Certificates will be presented by Astoria Mayor Willis Van Dusen at the July 7 Astoria City Council meeting.
