Returning for their third year at Broadway Park, the Seaside Wildcats will make their 2008 home debut tonight, as they host the Aloha Warriors at 6 p.m. for “Pack the Park” night at Broadway.

The Wildcats – a member of the Northwest Collegiate League – officially opened the season Saturday at Sckavone Field in Portland, in a doubleheader vs. the Pacific Javelinas and the Portland Titans.

In the opener against the Javelinas, Seaside’s Alex Berta (Edgewood College) paced the Wildcats’ attack with two hits, while Eddie Pavese (Cabrillo College) and Kyle Hallett (Akron University) both had two RBIs. Kyle Corwin (Neah-Kah-Nie High, Concordia University) pitched six shutout innings to pick up the win.

The Wildcats capped the day with a 5-1 win over the Titans.

Tonight’s home opener includes free admission and prizes for the fans.

The Wildcats are a part of the Collegiate Baseball of the West Summer League, along with the Pacific Javelinas and Portland Titans, and independent teams including the Aloha Warriors, Central Oregon Bucks, Olympia Athletics, Showtime Vancouver and Tacoma Cardinals.

Teams will play 34 to 36 games between NWCL and tournament play. The league will conclude with the NWCL Championship Tournament, July 26 and 27 in Seaside.

The Wildcats have added a few local connections to the roster, as they signed several players from the North Coast in the offseason.

Recent Astoria graduate Tom Jaworski (Mt. Hood Community College) and former Fisherman Brendan Landwehr (Clackamas Community College) have both joined the Wildcats along with Warrenton’s Eric Gantenbein (George Fox University) and Dan Wolfe (Pacific University).

Seaside High graduate Ross Knutsen (Willamette) was signed in the offseason, as was Ilwaco (now Central Washington) pitcher Anthony Wirkkala.

Former Knappa Logger Derek Jacobson is also a late addition to the roster. Seaside Gulls’ coach Joel Dierickx will serve as an assistant coach to head coach Kevin Tucker.
