SEASIDE – Dennis’ Seven Dees-Raintree Nursery announces its spring seminars to help get you growing. Though spring doesn’t officially start until mid-March, this is the time to start planning for planting. Seminars include such topics as soil improvement, bulbs, pruning, deer-resistant plants, roses, curb appeal and bonsai. All classes are free and open to the public.
BEAUTIFUL PLANTS IN SAND AND CLAY, THE ORGANIC WAY
“Beautiful Plants in Sand and Clay, the Organic Way,” with Gretchen Taylor of Kellogg Garden Products, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. Success starts from the roots up and organic guru Taylor will share her valuable knowledge.
GARDENING WITH SUMMER BULBS
Ed Hobbs of Simple Pleasures teaches “Gardening with Summer Bulbs” from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1. Back by special request, Hobbs will help participants understand those darling dahlias, lovely lilies, gorgeous glads and other summer-blooming bulbs.
PRACTICAL PRUNING
Whether you’re scared of secateurs or in love with loppers, “Practical Pruning” is for you. Seven Dees staffer Karen Hurd teaches the seminar from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8. With more than a decade of experience, Hurd shows how pruning plays a major note in the plant orchestra.
SUCCESSFUL GARDENING WITH DEER
Wild furry friends seem like fiends when they munch on prized petunias. Seven Dees landscape designer Robyn McGlade teaches “Successful Gardening with Deer” from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 15. For those challenged with deer problems, she will share a number of plants considered less desirable to the deer population. Much of this information is gathered through local experience. Participants will also have a chance to share deer success (or not) stories.
ROSES AT THE COAST
Roses are lovely, but have a reputation for being “difficult.” Betsy Byrum of Bailey Nurseries teaches “Roses at the Coast” from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22. She will discuss Bailey’s line of continual-blooming, disease-resistant, low-maintenance roses. She’s bringing samples, too.
CURB APPEAL
The saying goes “you never get a second chance to make a first impression,” and it’s true. Whether you’re thinking about selling or just moving in, “Curb Appeal” can help. Robyn McGlade teaches the class from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, with some simple and effective things you can do to create an inviting entrance to your home.
THE ART OF BONSAI
It’s the little things that make the difference, and knowledge about little things is Aaron Olson’s passion. Back for another round, Olson teaches “The Art of Bonsai” from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5. Learn the tools, techniques and plants to start or expand a collection of tiny trees. Come share your bonsai, bring your questions and plan to further your understanding of the amazing ancient art form.
