Obituaries: Ellen Mildred Niemi

Ellen Mildred Niemi, 86, of Astoria, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2007, in Astoria.

She was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Knappton, Wash., to Evertt Kallio and Alma (Rajnlin) Maki. She graduated from Astoria High School and was valedictorian of her class.

In 1941, she married Henry Niemi Sr. in Astoria. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Niemi worked for the Clatsop County Extension Service.

She was a member of Suomi Hall and 4-H.

Family members said she was an avid games player and cribbage master.

She is survived by two sons, Henry Niemi Jr. of Astoria and Ken Niemi of Seaside; a daughter, Cheryl Niemi of Knappa; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Niemi.

A private family service will be held in March, and her ashes spread in the Pacific Ocean.
